FILM AS AN ART

Film can be viewed as a form of art or entertainment. Art is generally anything that expresses feelings or captures moments, while film is basically motion pictures, movies or photoplay. Films display different types of arts whereby some qualify as artworks while some do not. Film as an art portrays the photographic record of an artistic performance within different aspects of filming.

Several dimensions that show film as an art are; photographic art, narrative art, performing art, pictorial art and audiovisual art. Films may be stories but they are not directly told: they are enacted; this shows that film is a performing art since that would make it a form of theatre. Movies are truly a form of art because they capture the world’s heart and soul or the heart of a generation or simply an idea.

Film as a pictorial art was a visual art that unfolded in time, so a movie was neither quite the same as a simple painting or a stage play but a three-dimensional reality, therefore cinema is viewed as a visual art. In filming production the choice of angle, camera distance and movement creates a visual perception of what is being shot or recorded.

The narration of film is the core of every movie because without a good story the movie is bound to fail. The essence of film as a narrative art is to find out the genuine and fresh stories that have not yet been told to the world so as to have a new set of ideas that will create new storylines which can be told over and beyond. Most discussions about film would mainly focus on what happens in the narrative: for instance, most genres of film display typical characters and plot patterns, example; the horror film typically centers on a monsters attack to humans, who must fight back to defend themselves.

Film as an audiovisual art depicts film as being the main medium of blending several aspects of a film narration such as imagery, spoken word, sound effects and music. This idea was developed back then by Eisenstein who was a video editor. He was fascinated by the ways in which images and music worked together to create an idea or a feeling that was hardly expressible by either one.

For the early film makers, cinema was a means of capturing reality and documenting the visible world. Interestingly cinema did not have to be photographic. Therefore film being an artistic performance is considered art because it uses so many forms of arts which are exposed to the public for observation, entertainment and enjoyment.

Basically film is considered a work of art when it affords an aesthetic stance: that is the nature and essence of art used in the film production. The various forms of art used in film making sum it up all as film being an art form of expression.

  1. I agree to the various forms of arts brought about by film, can we term film as a form of entertainment rather than art?
